Wedding Group Shots | Travis Johnson Photography

Group Wedding Portraits

Designate an organizergroup photographer

This could be someone you pay, but it's always nice to have a family member that knows everyone on both sides, or two people that know both sides. Photographers are good at taking pictures of whoever is in front of them, not at remembering every aunt and uncle. Now, of course it's great having one that can, but it's better to have the photographer concentrate on the photos.

Make a prioritized shot list

This should have all of your shots in order of priority, but also in an order that is easy to transition from one to the next. You want to minimize the amount of, "Get out. Okay now get back in." If time runs short (it always does), you now have a fallback to cut out the less important shots. When finalizing your wedding photography with Travis Johnson we will make sure this is covered.

Take group shots before the ceremony?

One huge question is whether the bride and groom should see each other before the ceremony to take pictures. The main reason to do this is to save time after the ceremony so you can go straight to the reception and visit with guests. I totally agree this is the way to go. If you do take pictures before don't fret about the tradition of "not seeing each other before the ceremony". Travis Johnson creates what is called the "First Look" and brides and groom's love it [read article]. This allows for you to do all the wedding party and family group shots before hand when everyone is fresh, makeup is in place, and there is not so much pressure to "get the pictures over so we can go to the reception."

Give yourself a window of time

Nothing runs perfectly on time. When planning how long you think it will take to do group pictures consider how much time you think it will take, but give yourself an extra 20-30 minutes just in case you hit a snag or two. Travis Johnson keeps this in mind when finalizing your wedding day that way you can relax knowing that there is extra time for those little delays.

Fun Shots!

"Informal formals" are family and bridal party portraits that don't have the traditional look and feel. This can range from being artistic, spontaneous, funny, crazy, or dramatic. This requires a participating bridal party, time, and a little imagination. They can be extremely fun to do and they make great, original pictures. I am always willing to do this.
